Poldark, Doc Martin and More Steamy Scenes

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

Well, that’s it, then; Sunday nights won’t be the same again until next summer although, in the meantime, scores of you will be here searching out the scenes, looking for the locations and probably having a great time checking out the characters…of Poldark, that is. He and George have left the Cornish beaches, Demelza has dallied in the dunes and the wicked vicar is off in search of, well, whatever wayward clerics seek out (he deserves a footnote all of his own). When the BBC..

Plenty To Do Even When It’s Less Than Sunny

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

So, we’re now well and truly under way. The house has changed, improvements made, builders, joiners, electricians, plumbers and sundry other artisan types have finally de-camped and some of our first guests have had a jolly good time and gone, too.  We’ve even managed to get some new garden furniture ordered. A busy time but all well worth it, we think. It was sad to see our regular  b&b guests leave  for the last time, but we’re delighted some are being attracted back and looking..

End of the B&B Show

Saturday, September 3rd, 2016

Well that’s it then: Poldark’s back on the telly, the kids have left Cornwall’s beaches to the grown ups and by the look of the fallen leaves covering the garden, autumn is making a sneaky return. Oh, yes, another bit of news, not quite world shattering but nonetheless important: After 10 years of doing this b&b thing we’re about to give it up but don’t panic, if you’re quick, there’s still time to catch us and you might find some great bargains for the rest..

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside…

Monday, July 18th, 2016

Just occasionally you find yourself in exactly the right place at the right time. And that was just the case the other night: On our way home from a perfect beach side barbecue (more on that in a moment) we turned down a little, unclassified lane off the steep and winding road which meanders down to Boscastle harbour, when there before us the most glorious sunset. Now I know you’re going to say that happens every night but it’s not often you’re there at just..

A welcome return – nine years on…

Saturday, July 2nd, 2016

You know, one of the really nice things about this job – and there are lots of them – is welcoming returning guests. There are those who, like summer swallows, return each year; there are some we may see every two or three years and there are some who, when we’ve almost forgotten them, quietly drop in to remind us of what a smashing time they had in Cornwall all those years ago. And so it was this week, just when we thought the breakfast..

It’s Showtime! Bring on the Cows

Tuesday, May 24th, 2016

It’s almost that time of year again and if you get in quick we could give you a nice little deal here at Orchard Lodge. What am I talking about?  The show, of course, the only one of its kind, The Royal Cornwall Show. It’s got to be the best agricultural show in the country and I’m not talking just a couple of bales of hay, the odd tractor and a beer tent, but acres and acres of really good stuff. I don’t know about..

In The Steps of Owlers, Wreckers, ill-fated Lovers and a Shocking Crime

Thursday, March 31st, 2016

So, we’re all set then for Walking Week: 16th to 22nd April. It seems to come round more quickly each time and for some this annual event has become a regular part of the calendar and a “must do” in Cornwall.  At Orchard Lodge we see it not just as a way of attracting more of you to the b&b but a chance for all of us to step out into the beautiful, unspoilt landscape that surrounds Boscastle. There are simply dozens of walks and..

A New Year, Marmalade and other stuff

Friday, January 15th, 2016

Can’t believe it’s midway through January  already and well into 2016. But despite it being cooler and, shall I say, a little less sunny than we’re used to, we’ve been busy here in Boscastle and at Orchard Lodge in particular. Whilst it may not exactly be beach weather we have been out and about enjoying some of our favourite walks and getting to know more about those less visited places around this lovely part of Cornwall. We’ve enjoyed, too, some of our first self-catering guests..

Early Autumn: Must Be Festival Time Again

Friday, September 4th, 2015

As a wonderful summer gives way to a golden autumn we’re getting ready for festival time. From September right into winter, food festivals and Cornwall go together like err, fish and chips or sea and sand. Anyway, you get the idea, there’s lots going on and at the top of our festivals’ list is the one right here in beautiful Boscastle, called, very appropriately, the Boscastle Food Art and Craft festival (www.boscastlefestival.co.uk). It’s a great celebration of all good Cornish stuff, lots of food, fine..
